"ВЫБОР" - Alexei Bautin | It Was Never About the Harder Path

Tomorrow, August 7, my new original song “ВЫБОР” will be released.
And before I let it go, there is something about this song I want to explain.
Not because I think a song needs an explanation.
It doesn’t.
Once music leaves its creator, it belongs partly to the listener. Someone may hear exactly what I meant. Someone else may find an entirely different meaning in the same words.
That is one of the things I love about music.
But “ВЫБОР” came from something that existed in my life long before this song did.
And that part of the story is worth telling.
It was never about choosing what is harder
There is a line at the center of the song:
«Я знаю путь легче…
Но им - не иду.»
I know an easier way...
But I Won't take it
Taken by itself, that line can mean many things.
It could sound like a rejection of easy choices. As if difficulty itself were somehow more valuable.
That isn't what I mean.
I don't believe the harder path is automatically the better one.
Sometimes the simplest solution is also the best solution.
When that happens, wonderful.
Take it.
What matters to me is something different:
I don't want “easier” to become the reason I accept “worse.”
That distinction has been part of the way I make decisions for a very long time - probably decades.
Long before there was a song called “ВЫБОР.”
Better, not harder
If I have two ways of doing something and one produces the result I truly want, while the other is simply more convenient, I usually know which one I will choose.
Even if it takes longer.
Even if it requires more work.
Even if I have to learn something new, start again, spend more time researching, or take several extra steps that nobody else will ever see.
Not because suffering makes the result more valuable.
Not because I need to prove that I can take the difficult road.
Simply because, at the end, I have to live with what I chose.
That idea eventually became one of the most important questions in the song:
«Когда вокруг станет тихо,
И в тёмном стекле я увижу себя…
Смогу ли я смотреть в свои же глаза?»
"When the silence finally comes,
And I face myself in the darkened glass...
Will I still be able to look into my own eyes?"
When everything becomes quiet and there is nobody left to impress, convince, blame, or explain anything to - what do I think about the choice I made?
For me, that is the real question.
The price is not the purpose
Another part of the song says:
«Иногда цена - это время.
Иногда - одиночество.»
"Sometimes the price is time.
Sometimes it's loneliness."
The word price matters.
Time, effort, uncertainty, additional work - none of those things are the goal.
They are sometimes simply the price of choosing what I believe is better.
And sometimes there is no price at all. Sometimes the easier road really is the better road.
I'll happily take it.
But when easier and better point in different directions, I already know which one matters more to me.
This isn't advice.
It isn't a philosophy I'm asking anyone else to adopt.
We all make our own choices, for our own reasons, and live our own lives with them.
This is simply mine.
And perhaps that is why “ВЫБОР” feels so personal to me.
I didn't invent an idea for a song.
The song grew out of an idea I had already been living with.
And then the music became bigger
There is another part of this project that I've deliberately kept mostly quiet until now.
While working on “ВЫБОР,” something happened that I hadn't originally planned.
The song kept growing.
Not in length.
In scale.
There was an emotional space inside it that I could hear, but I didn't want to force into the original arrangement.
Strings wanted more room.
The dynamics wanted a wider arc.
Certain moments felt as though they could expand far beyond the boundaries of the original version.
And eventually I stopped trying to contain that.
So “ВЫБОР” became more than one release.
The original Russian version arrives first.
The English song “The Choice” follows.
And today I can finally reveal one more part of this project:
“ВЫБОР (Orchestral Version)” - September 4, 2026
I deliberately call it an Orchestral Version, not an instrumental version.
Because removing the vocal was never the point.
This version exists because I wanted to let the composition become as large as it was asking to become.
I didn't want to compress that scale simply to keep it inside the boundaries of the original arrangement.
The orchestral version gave me room to open it up.
To let the strings breathe.
To let the dynamics travel farther.
To allow the quieter moments to feel more exposed - and the largest moments to become genuinely large.
It is the same emotional world.
But seen from a much wider perspective.
One idea. Three expressions.
What started as one song has now become three releases:
August 7, 2026 - “ВЫБОР” Original Russian version.
August 21, 2026 - “The Choice” English version - not a literal translation, but an independent song built around the same central idea.
September 4, 2026 - “ВЫБОР (Orchestral Version)” A larger orchestral interpretation of the original Russian song.
And I think this is finally the complete shape of the project.
Not three copies of the same song.
Three different ways of approaching the same emotional center.
The Russian version says it one way.
The Choice found its own language and its own voice.
And the orchestral version explores something words alone cannot provide: scale, space and movement.
Tomorrow, “ВЫБОР” becomes yours
I've spent a long time with this song.
Writing it.
Changing it.
Listening to it.
Questioning it.
And eventually reaching the point I wrote about previously - the moment when you stop changing something not because it is perfect, but because it finally says what you wanted it to say.
Tomorrow, “ВЫБОР” leaves that private space.
It will be available on Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music, Amazon Music and other major streaming platforms.
And then it isn't entirely mine anymore.
You'll bring your own experiences to it.
You may understand the words exactly as I do.
You may hear something completely different.
Both are fine.
But if you listen, I'd genuinely love to know what the song means to you.
